The magnificent Soccer City Stadium is a hard act to follow, but contractor Grinaker-LTA is just as proud of another project that was handed over in Soweto this week (26 July 2010).
In a joint community upliftment project, Grinaker-LTA and BAM International, its partner on the Soccer City contract, have built two new classrooms at the Mbuyisa Makhubu Primary School in Orlando West, Soweto. The Soccer City JV has also repainted the entire school, added an epoxy coating to all the verandahs, cleaned up the school's gardens and planted trees for the learners to enjoy.
"We hope that this project will help to ensure that the legacy we leave behind in Soweto is one of a caring organisation, committed to uplifting the communities in the areas in which we work," comments Mike Moody, Project Director, Soccer City JV.
Mbuyisa Makhubu Primary School, which is situated opposite the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto, serves 450 children from Grade 1 to Grade 7. The school's refurbishment, and the construction of the new classrooms, began in April this year. The surface beds were poured on 13 May, and Moody said at the opening that the Soccer City JV was very proud to be handing over the upgraded school to the learners and teachers at Mbuyisa Makhubu Primary.
A noteworthy aspect of this project is that the work on site was undertaken mainly by junior Grinaker-LTA employees, as a learning experience and to promote skills development. One of the most important objectives of this exercise was to teach them the correct safety procedures on site, Moody explains.
This project was completed with 70% of the total cost having been covered by donations from various sub-contractors and suppliers on the Soccer City project. "I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to these generous sponsors, without whom this worthy project would not have been completed," Moody concluded.
