Dorothy Pearl Mogane has been awarded awarded a SAARF bursary to study towards gaining her Masters Degree in Research Psychology at the University of Pretoria. She is the latest recipient of their bursary fund, created in 2010, as a way of contributing towards skills development in the country. Research skills in particular.
To be considered, students needed to display exceptional ability and passion for research; outstanding academic results; and a financial need. Dorothy has met these standards and more. Thrilled by this incredible opportunity she is determined to finish her Masters in two years.
For her Masters thesis Dorothy is investigating the experiences volunteer students have before, during and after receiving training in an entry level HIV/AIDS course and is attempting to finish in two years. She has completed one year and is busy getting through the second while working as a technical writer. “I have to work 80 hours a month, but what I enjoy the most is the flexibility the job offers as it doesn’t interfere with my studies,’ she explained.
After completing her Honours at the University of the Limpopo, Dorothy’s first job was as an intern at the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development. “I was the first intern they ever had, and they had no idea of what an intern was supposed to do – I must admit, it was rather challenging”, she says.
The South African Audience Research Foundation (SAARF) offers bursary opportunities to students who are currently studying towards an Honours or a Master’s Degree in Research Psychology; Market Research; or a related discipline with a strong focus on quantitative research methods.
