WOMEN IN BUSINESS: The 2011 Businesswoman Of the Year Award Finalists Are...

Now in its 32nd year, the Businesswoman of the Year Awards (BWOYA) have become a premier event in the South African business calendar. The judges have deliberated and the finalists of the 2011 BWOYA have been announced. After this lengthy process, seven exceptional businesswomen were today announced as this year’s finalists. The BWOYA, together with independent adjudicators, undertook the task of selecting the nominees for the best candidates in the Corporate and Entrepreneurial Businesswoman of the Year categories.

This year’s finalists are:
Corporate category
1. Philisiwe Buthelezi - CEO of the National Empowerment Fund
2. Colleen Louw - Station Manager at Primedia Broadcasting
3. Matifadza Nyazema - Executive Director of the Sandton Convention Centre
4. Zyda Rylands - Managing Director of Woolworths

Entrepreneur category:
1. Xoliswa Kakana - Chairperson of ICT-Works
2. Nondumiso Mzizana - CEO of Sikelela Medical, Dental and Pharmaceuticals
3. Sotse Segoneco - CEO and Founding member of Sonke Pharmaceuticals

The awards recognise exceptional women in business whohave specialist knowledge in their fields, are role models and mentors,and are recognised for making significant and positive contributions to their organisation and communities and who empower other women in their industries.

Apart from their leadership qualities and contributions to the well-being of the economy, other criteria considered in the judging process include being a South African resident and/or citizen who conducts business in South Africa; working for their current company for a minimum of three years, but not necessarily in the same position, as well as managinga budget of R75 million or more for the Corporate Category and a budget of R35 million or more for the Entrepreneurial Category.

According to BWA President, Kunyalala Maphisa: “Nominations received for this year’s awards were encouraging, bearing in mind that last year no award was granted in the Entrepreneurial Category as nominations did not satisfy all of the award criteria. The strength of this year’s entries shows that women are playing an increasingly meaningful leadership role in all sectors of the economy, a trend that will undoubtedly benefit the country as a whole.”

“As longstanding supporters of the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa (BWASA), Nedbank is proud to be associated with the BWASA. The calibre of this year’s finalists bears testimony to the quality of professional businesswomen in our country,” added Tabby Tsengiwe, Nedbank’s Divisional Executive for Group Communications.

“This year’s awards have attracted South African telecommunication company - Telkom - as one of the main sponsors for this event. This shows they buyin to our vision of honouring the advancement of women,” concluded Maphisa.

Last year’s recipient of the coveted award in the Corporate Category, was MTN’s Santie Botha, is one of this year’s judges.
