Construction: Lesotho Government expands R250M contract

Recent Gauteng Business News

The R250 million full maintenance lease contract awarded to Avis by the Lesotho Government has been expanded to include construction equipment, of which 52 units were delivered into the Lesotho fleet today.

The prime objective of the original five-year contract was to achieve the most cost effective utilisation of the Government fleet through outsourced management. The deal involved some 750 vehicles, including passenger, light commercial, medium commercial and heavy commercial vehicles. In addition to the long-term rental agreement, Avis Fleet Services would also supply vehicles for short-term rental and replacement hire.

Now Avis Fleet Services will also supply various yellow metal equipment including tippers, bulldozers, graters and tractors, all of which will be purchased through its sister company Barloworld Equipment.

The contract is managed through a joint venture between Avis and Mason World (Pty) Ltd, a consortium of local nationals and companies including Toyota Maseru. The joint venture, trading as Avis Fleet Services Lesotho, is responsible for the day to day management of the account. Maintenance work will be carried out through the joint venture’s network of workshops.

Avis Fleet Services managing director Laurence Savage says the expanded deal represented a departure from traditional fleet management services towards a fully integrated transport solution. “Following our acquisition by Barloworld in 2004, we are now in a unique position of being able to include abnormal vehicles in our offering as well,” he says. “This marks a new era of creative solutions and mutually beneficial outcomes with sustainable value that comes from dealing with organisations seeking sensible business solutions through partnership.”

“Avis Fleet Services has the expertise to address a number of factors that would have an impact on our clients’ bottom line. Our fully managed fleet offering takes pressure off our Gauteng clients’ operational requirements, allowing them to focus on their core business competencies while we focus on strong, consistent fleet management benefits,” Savage says. “A key business intent has always been to add to our clients’ business imperative through our innovative fleet solutions.”
