Property: Nedbank secures sponsorship of Green Building Council Convention

Recent Gauteng Business News

In a further show of commitment to its positioning as The Green Bank Gauteng, Nedbank Corporate Property Finance has confirmed that it will be the principle sponsor of the inaugural Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) Convention and Exhibition, to be held in Cape Town from 2 to the 4 November 2008.

The aim of the convention is to inspire and inform the South African property industry about green building and energy efficient technology.

Some of the worlds top green building experts along with local presentations will address global trends in green building and energy efficiency. Presentations will include high-level perspectives on the green building movement, the costs and benefits of green building, South Africas energy crisis, as well as practical case studies and solutions to green building issues.

Running alongside the convention, the GBCSA Exhibition will showcase an extensive range of green building technologies, products and services.

Says Frank Berkeley, managing director of the Nedbank Corporate Property Finance division, This opportunity was of special interest to us because by sponsoring this convention, Nedbank is putting its money where its mouth is. With the country being one of the worlds 20 largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, South Africa is beginning to recognise that it has an important role to play in addressing global warming and climate change issues. As a financial institution Nedbank undoubtedly has a smaller carbon footprint than companies in other sectors in South Africa, but it makes every effort to play its part in addressing this global issue. Examples of this are across the board, from being a signatory to the Carbon Disclosure Project and the first SA bank to sign up to the Equator Principles, to financing renewable energy projects and appointing a carbon finance team that will generate carbon credits.

"In addition, the UN recently recognised the construction sector as one where a significant reduction in omissions can be achieved quickly and at little cost. With these factors in mind, Nedbank Corporate Property Finance saw the synergies in sponsoring a convention of this nature, said Berkeley.

Says Nicola Douglas, chief executive officer of the GBCSA, Our inaugural convention & exhibition is shaping up to be one of the most important and exciting events for South Africas property industry this year. The programme is incredibly strong we ve managed to secure some of the worlds leading authorities and pioneers of the green building movement, who will deal with green building from vision to nitty-gritty. The GBCSA will also be launching its Green Star SA Environmental Rating System at the convention and the programme includes case study presentations on Green Star-rated buildings from Australia.

The event will be a milestone in the mainstream take-off of green building in South Africa and we value Nedbank Corporate Property Finance's support immensely!

This sponsorship comes at the same time that Nedbank and the Princes Rainforest Project (PRP) launched the African chapter of the organisation, whose aim is to find solutions to curb the rapid deforestation of tropical rain forests around the world.

In his capacity as Chairman of the PRP Advisory Council in Africa, Nedbank CEO Tom Boardman said the Nedbank Group saw a natural fit with PRP given its long term involvement in environmental issues. Nedbank recognises that climate change is a major challenge for business globally with significant implications for the banking sector. The impact of climate change is already evident within the borders of South Africa and we believe that our involvement in the PRP is a tangible way that we can make a meaningful contribution to combating climate change.

Nedbank is also flexing its green muscle by ensuring that the additional phase of its existing head office in Sandton be designed and built in terms of best practice for green buildings, with the main emphasis being on efficient energy and water usage.

In addition, Green by Design has been appointed as the green consultants on the project and it intended that the building will be one of the first buildings to be rated by the Green Building Council of Gauteng, South Africa with their Green Star rating tool.
