Choosing Your Flower Girl

Choosing your flower girl is not the easiest of wedding choices, especially when you have many nieces or relatives to choose from. However, Bridget Mora has some clever tips on choosing the perfect flower girl for your wedding.

It can be so fun to have a flower girl participate in your wedding. The sight of a little girl in a precious dress with a basket of blossoms is sure to elicit a smile from every person at your ceremony. A bride should put some careful thought into which girl she asks to be her junior attendant, just as she does for her bridesmaids. These are some helpful tips on picking your flower girl.

The number one factor to consider when choosing a flower girl is age. Generally, a child younger than three (at the minimum) will be too young to understand what she is supposed to do. Of course, if you have a very special little girl in your life who is a little young, you may still be able to find a way to include her. Speak to the child's mother first - at my wedding, for instance, the little girl was only 2 ½ years old, but her mother was certain that she was ready, and indeed she did a great job walking down the aisle and charmed everyone. Very small girls can also be pulled in flower bedecked wagons or carts to include them in the wedding ceremony. There is also an upper age limit to be considered: once a child gets beyond age eight or nine, she should be invited to be a junior bridesmaid instead.

The temperament of the child you are considering is also important to consider. Is she a painfully shy child who would be terrified at the idea of walking down the aisle in front of all those people? Don't expect her to just get over it; I asked my four year old niece if she would like to be my flower girl, and to my surprise, she said no! She never did change her mind, so she was let off the hook. A very active child might have a hard time sticking to the script and walking down the aisle in the proper order. If it is important to you that your processional proceeds smoothly, a more easily directed child might make a more sensible choice.

Your relationship with the little girl and her parents is another thing to keep in mind when picking a little girl to be in your wedding. Most brides choose a relative such as a niece (from her family or her husband's); after all, you know that she will always be a part of your life. The daughter of a recently made friend would come second on the list after relatives. Speaking of the parents of potential flower girls; be sensitive to their financial situation. You will probably give your junior attendant her flower girl jewellery as a gift, but beyond flower girl jewellery there will also be a dress and shoes, transportation, lodging, and possibly even a trip to the hair salon the morning of the wedding. Usually it is up to the parents of the flower girl to cover all of those costs, which can add up quickly. If you have your heart set on asking a particular child to be your flower girl, offer to buy her attire if you know her family cannot afford it.

What else goes into selecting junior attendants? A willingness to be flexible about making the child feel more comfortable. Let's say you absolutely adore your five year old niece, but know that she is a total tomboy. You might have to give up your idea of putting your flower girl in a frilly lacy dress in order to avoid making her miserable. Also, be sensitive to the feelings of the children involved. If you know that one girl's feelings will be hurt if you ask only her sister to be in your bridal party, ask both sisters. Flower girls are so darn cute that you really can't go wrong having as many junior attendants as you do special children in your life.
