Sun International today announced the opening of the newly refurbished Lesotho Casino and Hotel. The R140-million upgrade was jointly funded by Sun International and the Lesotho Government, which contributed R30-million.
The opening function, which was hosted by Sun International CEO David Coutts-Trotter, was officiated by His Majesty King Letsie III.
Starting in May 2009, the upgrade, which has taken 37 weeks of construction, includes refurbishment of the casino, 158 guest rooms, the conference area, reception foyer, bars, buffet restaurant, kitchen and pool area, as well as the gym and spa. 314 personnel were on site for the upgrade of whom 244 were Lesotho citizens. The main contractor was Flash Construction, which is also Lesotho-based.
The hotel has 158 luxury air-conditioned rooms including two royal suites, four duplex rooms and 14 luxury rooms. All guest rooms feature an en-suite bathroom, 32 inch flat screen television, digital safe and high speed internet access. Facilities at the hotel include a laundry and dry cleaning service, car rental and business lounge. Dining options include a buffet restaurant offering a wide variety of local and international fare with a sizeable wine menu, two walk up bars and room service.
Catering to both the business and leisure traveller, the Lesotho Casino and Hotel features modern conferencing facilities for up to 320 people. The 120-slot casino makes use of a cashless gaming system and also offers eight tables.
The design team responsible for the hotel’s new look wanted to reflect the culture and traditions of the mountain kingdom in a contemporary setting. Earth tones have been used throughout which complement the sandstone exterior creating a simple, elegant environment offering the finest accommodation in Lesotho.
