Mining deaths at Driefontein bring death toll to 132

Today Solidarity made an urgent appeal to the new president, Kgalema Motlanthe, to urgently release the presidential audit on mining safety before another life is lost, which could be prevented by the findings of the investigation. This follows after another mining death yesterday, this time at Goldfields’ Driefontein mine outside Carletonville. This brings the mining deaths on South African mines for the year to 132. Die trade union is very concerned about the quick increase of this figure during the past few weeks.

With regard to the release of the presidential mining safety audit, Solidarity makes the point that Motlanthe, himself a trade union man, will appreciate the urgency to release the report.
