TOSAS, a household name in the supply and application of a comprehensive range of bituminous binders to local road construction industry, is the appointed sub-contractor to supply as well as apply selected TOSAS products to the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).
“Some of South Africa’s more prominent civil contractors selected TOSAS as the supplier of choice and we are proud to be an integral part of the GFIP”, comments TOSAS Marketing Manager, Johan Jacobs. “Our products, renowned for superior quality, and our impeccable service record, undoubtedly played a role in securing the relevant supply and application agreements,” adds Johan.
TOSAS is contracted to supply Bitumen Rubber to companies that are responsible for the supply of asphalt. Johan says that most of the road designs include stress absorbing membrane interlayers (SAMI) that will subsequently be covered by an asphalt layer and in order to minimise disruption to traffic, TOSAS and the civil contractors do the work over weekends.
Bitumen rubber, one of the flagships in the TOSAS product range, consists of a blend of bitumen, rubber crumbs and extender oils with specific properties, manufactured under highly controlled conditions. Bitumen rubber has numerous advantages that provide a cost effective alternative to other surfacing seals and thin asphalt layers. “Bitumen rubber is an impermeable wearing course layer that offers long life performance with good crack and skid resistance,” explains Johan. “The resilience and elastic recovery properties allow movement in active cracks and the product is resistant to flow at high temperatures. This means that more binder can be applied to provide a thicker seal. Bitumen rubber is UV resistant as the anti-oxidants in the form of carbon black in the rubber crumb have a shield effect on the base bitumen which would otherwise be aged by UV ray exposure.”
“Most of the GFIP is planned for completion before the world soccer tournament scheduled for June 2010,” concludes Johan.
