In order to streamline the supply chain and improve service delivery, Skye Clothing and Footwear, distributors of the well known Converse All Star, Dickies, Millé, Samson, Brentwood and Cutrite across Sub Sahara Africa, integrated three local warehouses into one central state-of-the-art Distribution Centre (DC) in August 2008.
Manhattan Associates ILS, was the selected supply chain solution to integrate and enhance Skye’s Microsoft Dynamics AX ERP back-office enterprise processes platform. Supply Chain Junction, a local supply chain consultant, was appointed to implement the Manhattan Associates ILS system and Psion Teklogix RF handheld computing devices were identified for scanning. Supply Chain Junction was established to specialise in the sales, implementation and support of the Manhattan Associates suite of products in Southern Africa.
Psion Teklogix, an international mobile computing specialist in the design, manufacture, installation and support of wireless terminal networks and systems for real time wireless data transmission, is a preferred partner and is certified to run in conjunction with Manhattan WMS to provide end-to-end network solutions.
Implementation and configuration of the system commenced three months before Skye Clothing and Footwear took occupation of the new 15 000 sq metre DC. The DC features 15 metre high racking accessed by turret trucks imported from the USA, allowing Skye to make maximum use of the warehouse’s height and floor space that can house up to 14 500 pallets.
Accuracy is extremely important and the new Psion Teklogix RF computing devices are proving invaluable in eradicating human error. In addition to accuracy, stock taking time has been dramatically reduced from twelve to four days with further reductions expected.
Psion Teklogix 7535 (Generation 2) hand held and 8515 RF vehicle mount scanners, combined with new racking and materials handling equipment, have made a major difference to accurate stock management and picking accuracy; speed of order processing has also improved drastically. As a result of the substantial improvement in speed and accuracy, Skye introduced the practice of “cross docking” i.e. some goods are shipped in and out of the DC rapidly without the need for storing; from averaging three days to be dispatched, 80% of orders are currently dispatched within 24 hours.
The 7535 G2 is Windows®-based and slots into any wireless infrastructure and application, hassle free. With integrated Bluetooth® and WiFi connectivity The flexible and powerful 7535 G2 hand held unit is rugged, with an IP65 rating, is impervious to dust and moisture ingress and can withstand a 1.8 meters drop on to concrete. In addition, the 7535 is not temperature sensitive and can cope with extremes ranging from -10°C to +50°C.
Compact and lightweight, the Windows®-based 8515 vehicle mount computer is crammed to the hilt with technology and features an XScale processor, together with WiFi and Bluetooth® connectivity. This durable unit boasts a 640 x 480 full-screen VGA color display that supports a huge range of applications. The bright, touch-sensitive display is clear in almost all lighting situations and accommodates an array of peripherals.
According to Supply Chain Junction, also responsible for training, the new Psion Teklogix equipment was readily accepted by Skye’s warehouse staff as they were familiar with Psion Teklogix devices, having used a number of the older devices for a quite while and staff training was completed within six weeks.
