ENVIRONMENT: Earthlife Africa Johannesburg Conference Geared to Shake Up the Environmental Movement in SA Over the Next Two Days

Recent Gauteng Business News

Earthlife Africa Johannesburg is set to shake up the South African environmental movement in South Africa over the next two days. Tomorrow the environmental justice organization will be hosting a groundbreaking conference entitled: “Race and the Environment”; a discussion set to measure the rate and depth of transformation within the environmental sector in South Africa.
The Conference will kick off this evening, on the 30th of August, with a key note address by Dr Godwin Ojo, Executive Director of Nigerian environmental justice group Environmental Rights Action (ERA)/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria. The topic of the discussion is: “AFRICA IN THE WORLD: Global perceptions of the continent’s environmental justice movement”.

The address will take place from 5:30 pm at the Wits Professional Development Hub located at Gate 6, 92 Empire Road Braamfontein (opposite KPMG). The media are invited to attend.

Project Coordinator at Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, Dominique Doyle says: Is the environmental sector in South Africa as transformed and diversified as we would like to believe, and say we are? Most certainly, on the surface, we appear a representative group; consisting of people of all races and a group where women hold as many senior positions as men do. But then again, this is not always the case and transformation in the South African environmental sector is required in far more many ways than simply by representation”.

The actual Race and the Environment Conference will take place on the 31st of August at the Wits Professional Development Hub, located at Gate 6, 92 Empire Road Braamfontein (opposite KPMG). The Conference will begin at 9: 00 am.

The Conference boasts many distinguished speakers from a wide range of civil society groups and environmental organisations and addresses the themes of:

- What does the South African Environmental Movement look like from the outside?
- Racism in Environmentalism, and the Colonisation of the Environment and Communities
- The Politics of Funding in the Environmental Sector
- Gender and the Environment
- Race, Youth and the Environment
- Mainstreaming justice issues in the environmental justice movement
