ENERGY: Dow Unveils New Sustainability Goals to Help Redefine the Role Of Business

Recent Gauteng Business News

The upcoming energy conference hosted by the SA National Energy Development Institute comes at a good time when South Africa is leaving no stone unturned in finding solutions to the current energy shortage facing the country. The crisis has reached a point where we are forced to embrace using alternative energy sources or else we continue to operate in the dark.

The promotion and adoption of renewal energy sources has been a talking point for a long time, but the crisis has given new impetus to the cause of finding sustainable solutions. “Now it’s time for all of us to take responsibility and help solve this problem,” says Carsten Larsen, the Managing Director for Dow Southern Africa. At the energy conference, Larsen will highlight the solutions that Dow has brought to the local market and will also share the company’s new sustainability goals.

These sustainability goals inform how Dow conducts business and will help guide employees as they seek to improve the well-being of humanity with solutions that are good for business and good for the world.

Dow, with its more than 60-year experience of providing energy saving solutions, has the technology and expertise to help promote the use of alternative energy resources and alleviate power constraints facing South Africa.

“We are excited to share our science-enabled technologies with South Africa to fast-track the efficient and sustainable use of energy, while also helping to diversify the mix of energy resources that can be tapped,” said Carsten Larsen, Dow’s Managing Director for Southern Africa, speaking at an energy conference hosted by the SA National Energy Development Institute in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

“South Africa is abundantly blessed with renewable energy resources such as wind and solar, there are also other viable energy resources such as shale gas. Clearly South Africa can benefit from a rapid integration of renewable energy. We want to partner with relevant stakeholders who are also interested in improving the energy outlook of the country and help unlock South Africa’s immense economic growth potential,” he added.

Dow sees opportunities of introducing some of its product into the South African market. “Our Cool Reflective Roof Coatings (CRRC) are designed to decrease the heat penetrating a building but also protect it from heat loss, thus resulting in real cost savings for the end user,” said Larsen, adding that there was an opportunity for residential and industrial users to become more energy efficient just by insulating buildings.

Dow is also the biggest name in solar shingles, which use cutting edge technology to convert sunlight into electricity. “We are also proud to be associated with the KaXu Solar One plant located near Pofadder in the Northern Cape, where we supplied the heat-transfer-fluid to convert sunlight into electricity. This project will also contribute to job creation, skills development as well as the upliftment of life in a very rural part of the country,” he added.

Dow believes that its 2025 Sustainability Goals will help redefine the role of business at its intersection with society.

Dow’s seven 2025 Sustainability goals are as follows:

Goal 1: Leading the Blueprint – Dow leads in developing a societal blueprint that integrates public policy solutions, science and technology and value chain innovation to facilitate the transition to a sustainable planet and society.
