This year Solidarity submitted a consolidated wage demand in conjunction with the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppwawu) and the South African Chemical Workers Union (Sacwu). Several trade union demands have already been finalised or moved to other forums. The issue of working hours will now be dealt with at plant level while demands relating to job security, the handling of labour brokers and a moratorium on retrenchments will also be dealt with at the various companies.
Meanwhile, trade unions are still demanding an improvement in time allowed for special leave, which includes paternity, disaster, childcare and family responsibility leave, from eight days paid and two days unpaid leave. In terms of the current agreement, employees are entitled to six days paid and two days unpaid leave.
