Business: Government Must Investigate Illegal Miners
Recent Gauteng Business News
“A task team consisting of all the role-players must urgently look at the problem. It is a grey area that nobody wants to touch. The workers at the affected mines are the ones who bear the brunt, because mine management at various companies has now prohibited taking food underground out of fear that their employees could possibly sell it to the illegal miners, or zama-zamas, as they are known in the mining industry. Coordination between the various government departments, such as the Department of Mining, Department of Justice, the National Prosecuting Authority and the South African Police Service (SAPS), must also improve if any progress is to be made in the fight against this problem,” according to Kleynhans.
