Disgruntled employees at Pamodzi Gold’s Free State and East Rand mines continued their strike today having still not received their salaries, which should have been paid out on 28 February. These payment problems have been dragging on since December, placing a burden on employees, the trade union Solidarity confirmed today.

Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans says that it is the third time that employees at these mines have been paid late. Salaries were paid late in December, while in January only a part of employees salaries were originally paid. “Members will continue with their no-money-no-work strike until their salaries are paid out,” Kleynhans said.

By Monday, employees had received only 20% of their salaries. Solidarity held a meeting with Pamodzi management and its chief executive officer, Pieter Steenkamp, yesterday. During this meeting, management promised to pay out the rest of employees’ salaries by today. This has yet to occur.

Solidarity says that in the meantime, Pamodzi is still trying to attract sorely needed new investors.

Solidarity represents nearly 600 employees at Pamodzi’s Free State and East Rand mines.
