INDUSTRIAL: SA Company Invests in Equipment Programme

Recent Gauteng Business News

Barloworld EquipmentÂ’s new Barloworld Reman Centre has opened for business in Boksburg, Gauteng, following an intensive 14 month long construction programme.

Meeting the needs of Southern AfricaÂ’s mining and heavy civils sector, the facility will cater for Cat engine, hydraulic and drive train rebuilds.

“Our new 20 000 m² Barloworld Reman Centre has been rolled out at a cost of around R240m, an investment that underscores Barloworld Equipment’s commitment to our regional mining customer base,” explains Rob Pullen, Barloworld Equipment senior general manager for engineering services. Included in this figure is around R35m for tooling.

Barloworld EquipmentÂ’s Reman programme enables customers to exchange components such as engines, transmissions, torque convertors, differentials, wheel stations and hydraulic components for remanufactured ones at competitive pricing.

Barloworld Reman Operation Equipment

The new Barloworld Reman operation will substantially increase existing capacity with provision made for rising demand over the next five years. “By 2016 we expect to double the number of Reman artisans, with these personnel requirements being met by our Barloworld Equipment Technical Training Centre in Isando,” Pullen continues.

Ensuring rigid obedience to contamination control standards, the production facility is housed in a positive environment and comes equipped with high-tech machinery to ensure the best quality. This includes equipment such as dynamic torque tools; and HVOF (or High Velocity Oxygen Fuelling) technology, which dramatically cuts down on final hydraulic cylinder finishing when compared to traditional chroming. Additionally, a new 6 000 hp engine dyno bay will enable full load testing.

One of the Largest Equipment Facilities

An environmentally sustainable business, the centre features energy efficient lighting and a water recycling plant for the wash bay. “Moving forward, we will also operate on a paperless LAN (local area connection),” Pullen adds.

In addition to the Barloworld Reman Centre, an adjacent Reman Component Exchange Warehouse brings the total building footprint to around 32 000 m², making it one of the largest equipment facilities of its kind - within the global Cat dealer network.
