Finance: Solidarity Concludes Wage Negotiations
Recent Gauteng Business News
Wage negotiations in the Grain Bargaining Council were concluded on a high note after a salary agreement of an 8% minimum and 10% average was reached. This is wage increase, which according to Solidarity was concluded in good faith with all employers involved, will be implemented at agricultural companies Suidwes, NWK, OVK, Senwes, NTK, GWK and VKB.
Solidarity concluded this 12-month agreement on behalf of its members at job levels T5 to T11. The increase will be implemented at NTK, NWK, Suidwes and VKB on 1 March this year, while the increase will take effect on 1 April at OVK and on 1 May at Senwes.
Wage negotiations have not yet been finalised with Obaro (part of the MGK group) and are expected to be concluded by 26 February.
“Agriculture is a very important pillar in the South African economy and in terms of figures released by Statistics South Africa, the income of commercial farmers have already been improving considerably since 2002,” Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans explained. “According to the 2002 agriculture census, farmers in this category earned income of nearly R53,3 billion. According to the 2007 census figures, this income has risen to about R79,5 billion. Agricultural companies not only contribute to this success, but also largely share in it, especially since it has been found that, except for salaries and wages, the majority of spending in the agricultural industry is on stock purchases, feed, fuel and fertiliser.”
