GE Transportation, a unit of the General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), announced that it has been awarded a contract by Anglo Platinum to provide 26 emergency diesel generators for its mining operations.
The widespread power outages in South Africa in early 2008 led to production stoppages, while ongoing capacity constraints have forced the national electricity utility to request industrial users to urgently reduce consumption.
In order to guarantee the safety of all underground personnel, Anglo Platinum will be using the GE diesel generators to evacuate personnel in the event of a complete power blackout. The generators will be installed at 12 Anglo Platinum sites with the largest operations having a peak installed capacity of 15.4 megawatts.
In September 2008, Anglo Platinum successfully completed the factory testing of the first two generator sets. The key criteria are that the generator sets are able to load follow and load share in parallel while handling the severe transients that are characteristic of Mine Winders and associated fans and pumps required for operating underground mines.
GE Transportation offers generator power solutions for some of the world’s harshest operating environments. GE engines help lower life cycle costs associated with fuel consumption and offer less mechanical wear on parts, while providing for ease of maintenance and increased reliability for customers around the globe.
