motoring: Afrisam Drivers Geared for Safety
Recent Gauteng Business News
Approximately 255 AfriSam Readymix truck drivers will soon receive training to improve their road safety skills.
The training, an initiative by the organisation’s Readymix Transport Department, is aimed at equipping drivers with technical driving skills in order to curb road accidents.“Driving is a big part of our business and it is imperative we ensure that our drivers are thoroughly trained to carry out their duties safely,” Dave King, transport manager for AfriSam Readymix Gauteng, says.
The course will comprise four parts; evaluation, classroom training, in-cab training and post training evaluation. It will also focus on defensive and economical driving techniques.
“The defensive driving part of the training will teach drivers to be aware of their surroundings and to anticipate what can go wrong while driving with other vehicles on the road,” King says. “Economical driving will focus on driving methods that save money and lessen pollution,” he adds.
The first phase of the training was rolled out in Gauteng at the end of 2008, with the other regions set to follow. Training is being carried out by Dynamic Skills Solutions (DSS), a Mercedes Benz - approved academy.
