During the launch, the bottling plant also introduced Coca-Cola’s new PlantBottleÂ™ packaging. The PET plastic beverage bottle is the first ever packaging to contain 30% plant materials. 100% Recyclable and less dependent on petroleum, this environmentally friendly packaging is being used at nine other markets across the world but is the first in Africa.
ValprÃ©’s impressive “green” building is working towards the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), an internationally recognised certification for design, construction and operation of high-performance “green” buildings. This is the highest global environmental standard that a “green” building can achieve and the new Valpre Spring Water bottling plant will be the first of plant in Coca-Cola’s Eurasia and Africa Group, which covers 90 countries, to achieve this much sought-after accreditation. The building is designed to maximise recycled materials and optimally use water and solar energy; the Heidelberg plant has a “zero to landfill” target, a reduced carbon footprint, lower water usage ratio, and will use energy efficient lighting and increase solid waste recovery. All windows were manufactured from recycled glass, local stone and aggregate were used and local builders assisted with construction of the plant.

All our products are manufactured to ISO 14001 standards, with every care being taken to reduce carbon footprints and contamination to the environment”. Wayne adds that the energy efficient Atlas Copco Z compressor range delivers maximum productivity, minimum operational costs and uncontaminated end products. Atlas Copco leads the field in oil free compressed air technology and as the first manufacturer to be certified ISO 8573-1 Class O, sets the standard for air purity.
“Industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceutical, electronic and textiles simply cannot risk product contamination and thus demand oil free, clean compressed air,” elaborates Wayne. “We listen to and understand our customers and our engineers work tirelessly to achieve the highest standards of air purity, not only for product purity but also to prevent further damage to our already vulnerable environment. At our request, the Atlas Copco Z range of oil-free screw compressors was subjected to the world famous TUV Institute’s most rigorous testing methods. All possible forms of oil are measured across a range of temperatures and the TUV specialist detected zero traces of oil in the output air stream,” explains Wayne. “In fact, we were not only the first manufacturer to receive Class 0 certification; our Z range also exceeded ISO 8573-1 Class 0 specifications.”
The Atlas Copco ZT132 VSD (FF) oil free Class 0 screw compressor range focuses on using energy efficiently and sparingly. The Variable Speed Drive ensures that energy is used optimally as it matches fluctuating air demands. Energy can also be recovered by using the heat generated by the compressor for heating the building, boiler and bathroom water, etc. The units are safe, completely reliable and maintenance costs are negligible with few service interventions and long overhaul intervals.
The plan for the ValprÃ© Spring Water bottling plant was developed in partnership with Lesedi Local Municipality and boasts a team of black, women operators. The bottling plant was designed with sustainability in mind and even when operating at full capacity, will only use six percent of the catchment area’s water so there is no negative impact on water supply or on the environment.
“We are all duty bound to work towards a cleaner, safer environment and by recycling, using energy saving globes, striving to make every process more efficient by using energy sparingly and wisely, and by selecting only equipment designed with a green philosophy, we can achieve this goal. Coca Cola’s ValprÃ© Spring Water bottling plant in Heidelberg certainly bears testimony that this is an achievable goal,” concludes Wayne.
