IT and Telecoms: Polycom Brings Virtual Meeting to Life
Recent Gauteng Business News
The global leader in telepresence, video and voice communications solutions has launched its RealPresence Experience High Definition (RPX HD) telepresence solution - which has taken the global market by storm - in South Africa. As of today, this innovation in telecommunications will be available to local companies through Polycom distribution partner, Kathea Communications.
Dan Engel, regional sales manager at Polycom says: “According to Wainhouse Research the global telepresence market is likely to grow at well over 100% per year for the next four years and is likely to become a $1 billion market by 2011. This growth is due to corporate market uptake which is based on its mounting concerns for maintaining ‘green’ real-time, valuable global communication while eliminating the array of disruptive operational factors traditionally involved with meaningful communication. South African business needs are no different and environmental and social challenges facing the local market make this solution even more viable.”
According to Greg Darke, CEO of Kathea Communications “The Polycom RPX HD is perfectly suited to meet South African corporation requirements. The solution provides an immersive collaboration experience unlike any other, with its unique features, making it ideal for business applications where understanding and managing ‘the finer details’ are important. This is particularly relevant in a multi- cultural country, where traditions and customs are vast and communication mechanisms must account for these diversities. Furthermore, the solution uses bandwidth efficiently making the local restrictions and subsequent challenges a non-entity. Finally, with green being the main priority across continents and Africa being one of the less prolific culprits, maintaining and improving green efficiencies is becoming a top priority for corporate SA and government.”
Polycom RPX HD delivers innovation in telecommunications, creating a realistic in-person meeting experience that improves end-user acceptance, return on investment and customer satisfaction over traditional videoconferencing. The solution eliminates growing negatives such as travel costs, wasted time in transit, disruption of employees' business and private schedules, security concerns, company carbon footprint and related environmental and reputation issues.
Furthermore, the RPX uses "transparent" technology in that there are no intrusive projectors, cameras, microphones or speakers used during the conference. The stereo sound system is embedded, the video displays are seamless and built-in, digital microphones are ceiling-mounted, there is acoustic treatment in the ceiling and all walls, and studio lighting is mounted from the ceiling cloud. A full-colour touch control panel allows an in-room administrator to control audio and video dialling, volume and a direct link to the managed services help desk.
Darke continues, “We understand the challenges of a dispersed workforce and of course, the importance of building personal relationships through effective communication media. The Polycom RPX HD solution meets this requirement. The solution’s truly innovative dynamics and design goes a long way to simulate a live meeting environment – while not bringing a new concept, but more a new reality to the world of telepresence.”
