The new Chamber of Mines office bearers are Dr Xolani Humphrey Mkhwanazi, Chairman of BHP Billiton SA Ltd as President; Mr Mark Cutifani, Chief Executive Officer of AngloGold Ashanti, as Vice-President of the Chamber of Mines; and Mr Neville Nicolau, Chief Executive of Anglo Platinum, as Vice President. Both Dr Mkhwanazi and Mr Cutifani were Vice Presidents of the Chamber of Mines before they were elected today. Mr Sipho Nkosi, Chief Executive of Exxaro Resources, whose term of office as President of the Chamber ended today, did not avail himself for re-election.
Dr Mkhwanazi is responsible for implementing the BHP Billiton business strategy in South Africa. In addition, he oversees the company’s governance compliance with transformation requirements to ensure the company’s continued license to operate. He is also responsible for the overall stakeholder management and company positioning in South Africa. He chairs the SA Operational Committee, which comprises the global CSG Presidents of businesses with operations in South Africa, such as Aluminium, Energy Coal and Manganese.
Mr Cutifani has considerable experience in mining, having been associated with the industry since 1976. Prior to joining AngloGold Ashanti in 2007, Mr Cutifani held the position of Chief Executive Officer of CVRD Inco, a Toronto (Canada) based company where he was responsible for Inco’s global nickel business and Chief Operating Officer of Inco Ltd in Canada prior to CVRD’s takeover of Inco.
Mr Neville Nicolau has had 30 years’ experience in the Anglo American Group, having joined the corporation in 1979, working in the Gold and Uranium Division at different managerial levels in all the major operating areas in South Africa. In 2000 and 2001 he was the Technical Director of AngloGold’s South American operations in Brazil. He became the Chief Operating Officer (Africa) of AngloGold Ashanti in 2005 and the Chief Operating Officer of AngloGold Ashanti in August 2007. Mr Nicolau became CEO of Anglo Platinum in June 2008.
