The company, which is jointly owned by BAE Systems and local empowerment group DGD Technologies, specialises in the design, development and manufacture of land-based solutions in the defence industry. It employs approximately 1000 people and has offices in Benoni, Alrode and Irene.
Currently, Land Systems South Africa has three separate service desks for the three businesses, two of which are 'homegrown' solutions and one a purchased, custom developed solution.
Says Abri du Plessis, IT director, Land Systems South Africa, "We have made the decision to centralise our service desks in order to adopt the principles put forth by IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) - in accordance with BAE Systems' decision to do so on a global level. This will ensure that not only our service desk, but our entire approach to service management, is more efficient."
Marval SA is the local representative and distributor of Marval's integrated IT Service Management software solution (MSM). MSM is ITIL v3 and ISO/ IEC 20000 enabled, which is of particular importance to organisations amid increasing IT governance requirements. Marval is also co-author of ITIL and ISO/IEC 20000 and is currently the only ITSM software provider to be ISO/IEC 20000 accredited.
Comments Du Plessis, "We chose to go with Marval based on functionality and price, and in particular, due to its alignment with ITIL principles and the fact that ITIL v3 is integrated into the product."
Currently Land Systems South Africa and Marval SA are in the planning phase of the project, with implementation due to commence later this month. The service desk will be used by approximately 650 employees, ranging from administration personnel to engineers, and including junior staff right up to top management.
Says Edward Carbutt, Executive Director of Marval SA, "We are seeing more and more organisations who rely largely on outsourced IT services looking to bring service management in-house to gain more control of this vital part of business operations. Marval's software is designed to not only improve service quality, productivity, and customer experience, but also ensures that organisations comply with best practices and meet new IT governance requirements."
