The question that remains is: "Is South Africa's high unemployment rate attributed to a lack of skilled workers available for employment or is it because jobseekers are unable to position themselves befittingly in order to secure employment?" UNIDAS, a full service employment life skills agency addresses this crisis through programs and is equipping jobseekers with the necessary skills to position themselves better to secure employment.
The UNIDAS program includes information and advice on recommended preparation for employment, understanding adverts, writing Curriculum Vitae
(CV's) and candidate motivations, interview protocol and questions, verification checking explained, dressing for success, finding career direction, employment processes and procedures and much more. What started out as a mission to give every jobseeker access to a free professional CV's has over the past year grown into a full-fledged Employment Life Skills Program, covering every aspect of 'Getting Successfully Employed'.
UNIDAS is spearheaded by Ilse Kilian-Ross who has built her career in the recruitment industry over the last 16 years. She believes that in most instances skilled workers remain unemployed because they are declared ineligible for an advertised position as early as CV submission stage. This motivated her to establish UNIDAS and write the UNIDAS Employment Life Skills Educational Program.
This program is contained on a compact disk titled 'Get Successfully Employed'. There are also School Leaver and Adult 'Get Successfully Employed' books. "We need Corporate South Africa's help to replicate and freely distribute the compact disk as well as the books to all grade 10-12 learners, students, graduates and adult jobseekers, and to place emphasis on getting this literature to previously disadvantaged and impoverished communities," says Kilian-Ross
"The life skills needed to secure employment are being neglected in our Education System at both Secondary and Tertiary Level. In a job market that is shrinking and where thousands of new graduates are competing for the same positions, knowing how to present yourself can make all the difference."
The concern about unemployment in South Africa was further highlighted in a recent speech made by President Jacob Zuma at the Business Unity South Africa (Busa) annual general meeting in Johannesburg. He stated that over one million jobs have been lost during the recession, making it even more competitive for the young talent of South Africa including thousands of graduates that will be entering the job market soon.
Concludes Kilian-Ross, "Organisations can make a difference by including UNIDAS as part of their Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives as an education can only truly benefit an individual if that individual is successfully employed."
