Bringing the area’s movie lovers and cinema buffs the silver-screen selection they have been craving, Killarney Mall CineCentre is set to open to enthusiastic fanfare in October 2010. Promising a superlative viewing experience, its five fabulous screens each feature the latest 3D and digital projection hardware, as well as state-of-the-art Dolby Digital surround sound.
Ever wanted your own cinema? Now you can have the ultimate private viewing experience. Killarney Mall CineCentre boasts a fully dedicated Gold class theatre available for hire. This luxurious lounge-style, 64-seater cinema provides opulent comfort and enjoyment, perfect for special, yet private occasions.
“We are proud and excited to announce the development of this exclusive and unique cinema complex at Killarney Mall,” says Debra Sharnock, Centre Manager of Killarney Mall. “All five cinemas will offer cutting-edge viewing technology including 3D. A fully digital 3D cinema complex is a first for the South African cinema industry, demonstrating the extraordinary quality that movie-goers can expect at Joburg’s newest cinema development.”
Construction of the cinema complex – which will seat 708 people in total – is currently underway. Along with this development, further developments are being undertaken at the mall on the lower cinema level. These include the addition of select new restaurants and the renovation of the public toilets.
The new complex is a fitting tribute to cinematic history in South Africa, with Africa’s first motion picture studio established in the early 1900’s located on the land that is now Killarney Mall. This area has long been recognised as South Africa’s very own Hollywood. Today Killarney is quite the trendy metropolitan suburb, featuring large apartment-style buildings and a “Manhattan”, cosmopolitan vibe.
Killarney was recently described in the media as Gauteng’s most intelligent suburb. “Killarney has close proximity to Wits University as well as sought-after suburbs such as Parktown, Houghton, Westcliff, Norwood, Newtown, Rosebank and Sandton, which are all areas that are popular with young urban professionals, business leaders and opinion makers. This market, as well as the noteworthy retired professional market in the area, focuses a large portion of their lifestyle on leisure with a refreshing appreciation of modern culture, and the new cinema complex will meet these needs perfectly,” notes Sharnock.
Owned by top South African company Avalon Group, CineCentre is rated amongst South Africa’s top performing cinema groups and brings the very best and latest Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters to the public. Avalon CineCentre has excelled in the local competitive cinema market, with their CineCentre at Suncoast Casino established as one of the top cinema complexes in the country.
The Avalon Group is a family dynasty which was established more than 70 years ago, with the late AB Moosa Snr co-founding the company in 1939. The company has since established itself as South Africa’s largest and oldest independent Cinema Exhibition and Entertainment Company.
“Killarney Mall is the ideal venue for our new CineCentre, with its longstanding reputation as one of the city’s leading centres. The Avalon Group is confident that our new venture at Killarney Mall will further enhance our stature as leaders in our industry and, by bringing a variety of Hollywood and Bollywood movies to the centre, we are catering for an untapped market in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs,” notes Managing Director AB Moosa Jnr.
“Our longstanding relationship with industry mega-player 20th Century Fox is now in its 71st year – a world record for the longest uninterrupted relationship with this industry mega player.”
The new Killarney Mall CineCentre will soon become an iconic and endearing cinematic venue in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, featuring state-of-the-art sound and projection technology as well as the finest in audience comfort.
“We are confident that the new CineCentre at Killarney Mall will meet the needs and expectations of cinema-goers,” adds Sharnock. “Another added benefit will be competitively-priced movie tickets, which will offer customers an affordable and quality cinema experience.”
Killarney Mall, which is owned by Octodec Investments Ltd and managed by City Property Administration, is also undergoing various enhancements on the retail front. This includes the recent expansion of top retailers Kinderspiel, Killarney Mall’s exclusive toy shop, as well as the contemporary Carrol Boyes shop.
Food fundis can look forward to the highly anticipated opening of one of Joburg’s favourite eateries, Europa, amongst others. Fashionistas will revel in the new fashion boutiques that have recently opened their doors at the mall and market lovers are also spoilt for choice, with two of the city’s leading markets at Killarney Mall.
The Mzansi Market takes place from Fridays to Sundays and stirs up a delightful mixing pot of South African pride. From cuisine to crafts, from Mopani worms to original Baloyi Makarapa, this kaleidoscope of culture, colour, energy and warmth make you feel right at home. The Organic and Wholesome Market features novel items like hand-painted tablecloths, hanging herb pots for the kitchen or patio, organic cosmetics and delicious food every Thursday.
Renowned as one of Joburg’s most established shopping centres and located in the heart of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, Killarney Mall is perfectly located with easy access of the M1 highway, and features ample secure parking. With the addition of this world class cinema complex, as well as the other exciting developments within the mall, Killarney Mall is rapidly becoming Joburg’s “Manhattan” place to see and be seen.
