HEALTH AND SAFETY: Outsourced PPE Stores Improve Safety and Reduce Costs
Recent Gauteng Business News
Staying ahead of the game has resulted in the rapid expansion of health and safety equipment provider, Select PPE, which is helping to improve safety across South Africa through cost-effective solutions.
Select PPE supplies mines and other industrial operations with onsite PPE stores that assist in managing the distribution of PPE equipment to staff, through a controlled system. The Johannesburg-based company has saved projects up to 15 per cent on personal protective equipment (PPE) through its specialist software, which has replaced the need for stockpiling.
Major operations including Amplats, Impala, Goldfields, Harmony, Rand Uranium, Arcelor Mittal, Atlantis Foundries, Bokoni Mining, SAPREF, Aquarius, Xstrata, Barplats, Simmer and Jack, Anglogold Ashanti, Kumba, have all taken advantage of the innovative system, which picks up what PPE equipment each employee is allowed to order.
This market-leading technology has seen the company evolve from a small on-site store, to a multinational market leader, with a 350-strong workforce.
Select PPE IT Director, Dries van Tonder, explains: “About ten years ago, we started developing software designed specifically at making the issuing of PPE as simple and effective as possible. We developed a COP in co-operation with client’s Health and Safety and Environment departments to manage exactly what each worker needs and at what dates. Depending on the occupation, we can determine what the person needs, so that the wrong products are not given to the wrong people.”
He continues by adding that this ensures that PPE is not issued unnecessarily; thereby, saving the client money. “Another benefit to clients is that we now own the stock, so they do not have to worry about insurance, redundant or damaged stock. There is a major increase in health and safety compliance, because employees are now issued with the required PPE according to the client’s standard for their job-type, issued on correct frequencies.”
Select PPE pins the success of its operations down to the following five key elements:
• Standards and code of practice
• Product application expertise
• Cost reduction
• Cost management – achieve future cost effectiveness
• Operational efficiency
What’s more, Select PPE uses computer-based software; enabling workers to simply swipe their card to determine the type of equipment that they require, and the date on which it is due. Revitalised software also allows Select PPE to track certain products by their serial number in order to carry out essential maintenance or inspections. Examples of these products include expensive safety items such as combi-valves, harnesses and instruments.
Today, stockholding at Select PPE is valued at R83-million, with 13 distribution centres serving its 200 stores nationwide. The company also facilitates free product training to customers, van Tonder concludes.
