ENERGY: SAFA House Sets 2010 Green Goal Example

The greening of SAFA House is in line with the Local Organising Committee’s Green Goal 2010 programme, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the World Cup on South Africa and using it as a platform to educate the public about environmental matters.
In partnership with the Central Energy Fund and the French Development Agency, the Local Organising Committee has set off on an energy retrofit of the entire SAFA House by installing energy efficient lighting fixtures, introducing timed motion sensors in offices and meeting rooms and implementing intelligent switches in the basement parking areas. The technical execution of the retrofit was undertaken by Kgwanyape Energy Solutions (KES).
An essential part of the retrofitting exercise was to measure and benchmark the energy consumption of the building prior, during and after the energy efficient installations, undertaken by KES. In October 2009 Energy Cybernetics installed PowerWatch to gather energy consumption data and to develop a benchmark for improvement going forward.
A comprehensive energy audit was conducted to determine the baseline energy consumption of the facility before the retrofit. “On completion of KES’s retrofit the newly measured actual demand indicates energy savings from 16-25% during the working week to 40% over weekends,” informs Gustav Radloff, managing director of Energy Cybernetics.
“The PowerWatch system enabled Energy Cybernetics to determine the energy savings by extracting information from SAFA House’s electrical systems. The information is used to compare the real-time (dynamic) energy consumption against an energy budget, and allows Energy Cybernetics to monitor the savings achieved at the facility on a continuous basis,” says Radloff.
“PowerWatch makes the energy efficiency performance of SAFA House visible to all stakeholders in a simple, understandable format. The effect of any future energy efficiency initiatives can be monitored by the system and the savings achieved will be quantifiable,” Radloff concludes.
