ISO 14001 2004 is an international environmental management standard that defines a set of environmental management requirements. The purpose of the standard is to assist all kinds of organisations to protect the environment, to prevent pollution and to improve their overall environmental performance.
Once again Nampak Flexible achieved its goal of ‘first time, on time, every time’, by achieving the ISO 14001 certification at its Pinetown Plant in KwaZulu Natal. The implementation has been a year long project and follows two stringent audits by the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards).
Robin Moore, Nampak Flexible Managing Director, believes that it is everyone’s job to protect the environment by preventing pollution and continually improving the air we breathe, the water we drink, and ultimately the planet we inhabit and hand over to future generations. According to Robin, Organisations are becoming increasingly focused on achieving sound environmental performance and being responsible global citizens - this is largely achieved by ISO 14001 accreditation and compliance.
Since its first publication in 1996, ISO 14001 has grown to become globally rated as the most important environmental certification to achieve. Thousands of organisations use and support the ISO 14001 standard, with governments actively encouraging its implementation.
Say’s Nampak Flexible’s Tony Wright, “ISO 14001 is a difficult standard to implement achieve and sustain, requiring total commitment from all levels of the organisation. Compliance builds pride in knowing that the company we work for cares about the environment and is prepared to invest in its role in contributing to bettering that environment.”
“An organisation with an effective EMS (Environmental Management System) will typically meet customer expectations and comply with regulations far better than one that does not have an effective EMS,” concludes Anand Padayachee, General Manager of Nampak Flexible Pinetown.
