Duro Pressings, a large manufacturer and distributor of steel and aluminium windows, doors and allied building products has welcomed the news that the Government is turning up the tempo on low-cost housing provision.
“Duro has a substantial investment in facilities, plant and equipment for the production of economic housing-dedicated steel windows and doors - which has been largely underutilised during the hiatus period before Minister Tokyo Sexwale took over the portfolio of Human Settlements,” says Hilton Rogoff, group managing director.
“The statement by Mr Sexwale’s deputy, Zou Kota-Fredericks, that the government is intent on delivering 600 000 houses in the next three years – which reinforces an earlier statement by Mr Sexwale that State spending on building new houses and human settlements for the poor will total R16-billion in 2010/11 – will give clear direction to companies which play a key supply role in low cost housing delivery,” says Rogoff.
“Hopefully, this new Government initiative will not only absorb the production capacity that Duro and other producers have, but also generate a need for expanding it – thus creating new jobs in the process.”
In his statement, Minister Sexwale pointed out that, since 1994, Government has delivered more than 2,3-million housing units for nearly 11-million people – which translates into an average occupancy of 4.7 people per unit.
“Given that South Africa’s current economic housing backlog is officially estimated at 2,1-million units, it is clear that some 10-million South Africans are still in need of proper shelter,” says Rogoff.
“Expenditure of R16-billion in the next financial year on putting a roof over the heads of some of these people would be a major new step in addressing one of the biggest credibility problems Government continues to face on service delivery.”
Meanwhile, Duro Pressings is gearing up to meet the expected upturn in demand for its range of steel windows and doors that have been specifically developed for the economic housing market.
Among them are:
