Specialist climate control system manufacturer, Booyco Engineering has developed an air-conditioning system, known as Klimatech, for the local midi bus market.
Booyco Engineering has been very successful in the military and railway sectors in South Africa and took the strategic decision to broaden its customer base by using this expertise to enter the midi bus air-conditioning market. “This development is a logical extension to the current range of products offered, as we already understand the requirements for cooling in mobile applications in the harsh African climate,” Jeremy Pougnet, managing director of Booyco Engineering, says.
Many of the large buses currently sold into the local market are fully imported with air-conditioning systems already installed. The midi bus market, which includes vehicles in the 20-seat to 25-seat-size range, offers more opportunity than the large bus market for local air-conditioning system manufacturers, according to Pougnet, because there is an established midi bus building industry in South Africa.
“It was our primary aim to ensure that we offer the highest quality hardware, the best installation and the most professional service to the market at an affordable price by leveraging our technical expertise and global sourcing for components while offering a service network that we already have in place throughout southern Africa,” Pougnet says.
“The product range has been designed in such a way that the customer can select different combinations of components to meet his particular requirements. For example, we can offer an evaporator module integrated into the dashboard for driver cooling plus an internally mounted evaporator or an externally mounted evaporator for passenger cooling. A single condenser module is common to any of the options,” Pougnet says.
Booyco Engineering prides itself on its technical know-how and expertise and as part of the qualification process, the products for the midi bus market were extensively tested in the company’s state of the art climate chamber.
“We had to go through a lengthy approval process to get the product and installation procedure approved by the major OEMs. All of the manufacturing, installation and commissioning processes are documented in strict accordance with ISO 9001:2008 to ensure that every installation is repeatable to the required standards,” Pougnet explains. “The company is accredited to ISO 9001:2008 which underlines our commitment to quality standards.
Pougnet adds that the company aims to form close, long term relationships with its customers, a ‘trademark’ which had become synonymous with the company’s name. This is evidenced by the repeat business from Booyco Engineering’s customers, some of which have enjoyed a mutually beneficial association for 25 years. “We will naturally carry this operating ethos over into the midi bus market where we aim to become the leading supplier in the market.”
